That One Time in Santa Fe

A Short Story About My Comedy Life.

So we were on the road in the early 90s doing standup. Me, pretty much homeless; the feature act, might have been Dwight York but I think he was headlining by then…
Headliner is this guy called Franchie San Pedro, I think? Brings a giant 1990s videocam with him everywhere so he can record his sets, thing looked like a TV news guy’s setup.
Anyway, we get into Santa Fe, little cocktail bar with a bandstand in a decent hotel. Seats maybe 150? So, first night it’s full and bopping and proper.
Saturday night, one couple shows up.
Franchie sets me & the feature free (yeah, chick opener, sacrificial lamb position). Then he sets up the video rig to frame up just the table they’re sitting at plus a little space around. He pulls up a chair, sits down to join them, and does a fecking SOLID HOUR for them. Tableside.
I learned a lot that night.
